Meet Chris Smith, Author of Blood On The Range: Caught In The Crossfire the new exciting western Novel set for Release in the middle of September.
-Now, Chris, I understand your novel is both a printed book and an ebook, Tell us more about yourself and your book
I’m from South Africa and I’ve always loved reading. I read a lot of Louis L’Amour and Robert Ludlum when I was younger. A lot of Agatha Christie as well. I’ve always enjoyed action, adventure and mystery novels. My novel is a western and it’s about Nathan Todd, a young cowboy who gets involved in a range war when he falls for a young woman.
He’s a good fighter with guns or fists, but he often gets himself into situations where he needs his friends to help him out.
-Fascinating! What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always enjoyed reading and wanted to challenge myself to write a book. I had some free time on my hands and decided to go for it. Before I knew it, I had 20 000 words down and I gave it to my twin brother to read. He enjoyed it and encouraged me to keep writing. My main inspiration is to provide for my family and to see how far I can get with my writing.
-That’s very impressive! What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?
I work as a financial planner so time was a big challenge. I had also not planned the book out properly so I wrote myself into a corner once or twice.
-Yeah it happens with all authors. How do you stand out from your competition?
I think that my style is easy for people to enjoy. I give enough detail to make it real, but not so much that the reader feels swamped and gets bored. My hero is also not invincible. He has flaws and weaknesses that people can relate to.
-Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?
I love reading. I enjoy a wide range, from Lee Child’s Jack Reacher stories to Robert Ludlum’s spy novels. Agatha Christie is also a big favorite and I enjoy James Patterson too.
-Tell us, what is your next step as an author?
I am currently working on a sequel to Caught In The Crossfire. The working title is Blood On The Range: The Breaking of a Badman. I’ve also started a fantasy trilogy, as well as a police procedural, titled Staring Into The Shadows. I’ve put up some of my work on wattpad under the profile ChrisBSmith1234. https://www.wattpad.com/user/ChrisBSmith1234
Readers can take a look and provide feedback on what they enjoy or think should be changed.
-That’s amazing! Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?
The keys to success are to write daily, and to get a wide range of people to critique your work. We all look at things differently so you can learn from everyone that reads your book. Don’t let anybody make you think that you can’t succeed. The only thing standing in your way is your own doubt.
-Very true! Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’m hoping to create a brand, and characters, that people immediately enjoy and can associate with. Blood On The Range is going to become synonymous with cowboys and The West.
That’s awesome, thank you Chris for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
