Meet Lea Cherry, Author of Chimera the new exciting Horror Novel Released on the 20 October 2020
-Now, Lea, I understand your novel is an ebook. Tell us more about yourself and your book
Chimera is a horror story that’s featured in the Soul’s Day Boxset set to release in October. It’s about a group of friends that think it would be a great idea to go camping in a haunted forest for Halloween. That was until their friends start disappearing one by one, kidnapped by a creature that will stop at nothing until they are all gone.
I’m from South Africa, mother of two, and have a fascination with the written word. I believe that words can heal so I try and share the sparkle wherever I go.
-What inspired you to write this book?
I have always been a horror fanatic, ever since I saw Nightmare on Elm street when I was about 5 years old. Normally things that go bump in the night scare people, but I am one of those that enjoy the scare and even go out trying to scare others. I got the idea for Chimera after I watched a music video about teens camping in the woods and playing music around the bonfire. My mind immediately went to ‘what could go wrong?’
-What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?
Think the main challenge was making time to write. With this whole Covid19 thing going around, I had to work from home, the schools were closed so I had to balance the work and homeschooling along with making time to write the book.
-How do you stand out from your competition?
They say that you need to know the rules so that you can break them properly. When I was about 14 years old, my best friend and I wrote a list on how to survive a horror movie. I know every trope, and style there is, so the horrors of today are so tame and does little in the scare factor. Someday, I will change all of that I believe.
-Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?
Don’t really know a writer that isn’t an avid reader. I enjoy reading the YA range because it shows how a normal mundane person can change and grow, and being ordinary can actually make you extraordinary. I do like horrors and thrillers as well though, basically, if the storyline is good, I’d read anything. As for my favorites…that’s a hard one. If I had to think about books I’ve read over and over again, it would be Vampire Academy series, Dead Poet’s Society, and The Shack.
-Tell us, what is your next step as an author?
Next step? Keep writing. I have so many stories locked away in the back of my mind that’s screaming to come out. So right now, I’m working on a YA Urban Fantasy story that I hope to release next year. Other than writing, reading. My TBR list is a very tall order that needs to be trimmed down a bit.
-Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?
Most people say to never stop writing, but no one tells you what to do when the muse alludes you or when you’re faced with the infamous writer’s block. I would say listen to music, watch kids tv shows, music videos etc. You never know where inspiration will come from. When you’re faced with the writer’s block… Free write. What this means is that you grab a pen and paper and just write what comes to mind. Whatever it is, just jot it down and before you know it the block is gone.
-Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yeah, to those that are scared to follow their dreams, JUMP! Don’t be afraid to express yourself and be who you are. You might be exactly who someone else is looking for. Inspire, motivate, live in the light and share your sparkle wherever you may go.
That’s awesome, thank you Lea Cherry for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
