Meet Collette Scandrett, Author of Journal of Abuse the exciting Mmmoir released on August 31, 2020.
-Now, Collette, I understand your novel is both ebook and paperback. Tell us more about yourself and your book
I published this book as a way to express some of the darker times that I expressed during a period of my life. There was a time when I was in a toxic relationship that shook me to my core. Not only was the relationship damaging but I was also damaging to myself. This book reflects these times as journal entries addressing some of these instances.
-I am sorry to hear about your bad experience. What inspired you to write this book?
I wrote this book as a way of sharing some of my experiences and reflections on them. It was a way of sharing how much abusive relationships can affect your life and in so many different aspects.
– True! What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?
The main challenge I faced in writing this book was being able to sit down and write some of my experiences without it having a triggering effect.
-Of course! How do you stand out from your competition?
I stand out from the competition as I express things in my own voice. I feel that every writer has their own voice and different voices can appeal to different audiences. I think that every writer is great in their own right and I just write to express and hope that others can identify with the work and get something from it.
-That’s inspiring. Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?
I am typically a huge reader although I have not had a lot of free time lately. Typically, I read more of the classics as well as some African-American writers. My favorite books are Speak and The Completed Collected Poems of Maya Angelou.
-Nice choices! Tell us, what is your next step as an author?
I am currently working on getting my book into some colleges and universities as a part of their curriculum. My next step is to continue writing and getting my works out through as many avenues as possible.
-Sounds awesome! Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?
I would just say that you have to stay not only focused but be aware how much time and money it takes to be an indie author. I would say that it is worth the money to get a cover created as it is something that draws in the audience along with the blurb.
-Agreed! Is there anything else you would like to add?
Although some people may not be a fan of your work it does not mean that it is not good. Sometimes some people are the wrong audience for your work. You have to make sure you appeal to the right audience for your work and don’t take things personal when people are trying to help you improve and appeal to a broader audience.
That’s awesome, thank you Collette Scandrett for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
