Justice for the Missing

Meet Phillip Davis, Author of Justice for the Missing the new exciting speculative mystery-suspense Novel Released on the 15th of August, 2020.

-Now, Phillip, I understand your novel is available in paperback and ebook. Tell us more about yourself and your book

I am an elementary school teacher living in Ohio with my wife of 12 years and our cats, dogs, and birds. I’ve been writing novels for several years, but this is only the second one I’ve taken all the way to publication.  The other is a family novel about Random Acts of Christmas, called Peppermint Lightning. There is a Halloween companion to that one coming out soon. It’s called Jack’O’Lightning. I write in a few different genres. The next projects are in the suspense and thriller categories. I write like I read; a little of everything. When I’m not reading, writing, or teaching, I’m hiking or cooking.

-I am a great animal lover myself! And your portfolio sounds very diverse and interesting! What inspired you to write this book?

My wife shared a podcast with me about people who go missing in national parks. It’s a lot of people, and there aren’t answers about what happened to many of them.  I took that idea, my love for those parks, a fascination with conspiracy theories, and a love of a science fiction element I don’t want to give away, and decided I could combine them into a cool story.

-Very impressive! What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?

I wanted people to care about the main character, Matthew. He’s a pretty simple guy.  He’s not a flashy hero.  He’s not exciting. He’s just a nice guy.  He does end up in a situation that makes his life pretty exciting though, and I think people will get behind him.

-Yeah it’s important that your readers relate to your characters. How do you stand out from your competition?

A lot of writers hate dialog. I’ve been told dialog is a strength for me and really brings characters to life and that their relationships to one another really come through.  Several people have told me they think about the characters after the book is over.

-I believe you and I have that in common, I was also told my dialogues are my strength point. Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?

40 books this year and counting! I’ve been reading mysteries and thrillers lately, but I read just about anything.  I’m a science fiction fan, for sure.  I read a lot of fantasy for many years. Recently I read “The Silent Corner” by Dean Koontz.  Jane Hawk is a great character. And I love Jodi Taylor’s “Chronicles of Saint Mary’s. “

-Those are personal favorites of mine as well, I loved the silent corner! Tell us, what is your next step as an author?

I have several projects going on right now.  I’m doing an audiobook of Peppermint Lightning and probably one for Justice for the Missing. Then I have Jack’O’Lightning to work on before Halloween. I’m writing on a possible sequel to “Justice,” and two projects with working titled “Self Help” and “The Truth About Crazy.” I’ve been saying for years I wanted to spend more time writing and getting my stories into peoples’ hands.  That takes a lot of work.  I’ve been building my social media presence and my website. I’m excited right now because I think I’ve got the momentum.

-Wow, that is so cool! You are definitely on the right track! Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?

Write. Seriously. Don’t quit.  Don’t question yourself.  Just write.  That idea you had? It’s worth a story.  Write it.  Take help and criticism from others.  A lot of people have been exactly where you are and they can help. Network.  Read about writing, but forget the idea that any book can give you the magic formula.  Marketing is part of indie publishing.  There’s no way around it.  Make sure before you just click publish, you’ve thought a bit about how you’re going to get people to see and want to read your work.

-Very that! Is there anything else you would like to add?

I love hearing from my readers. There are Facebook groups for my existing titles. I’m on twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. There’s also a blog at peppermintlightning.press and a bi-weekly newsletter. Drop me a line. Ask a question.  Share your story.

That’s awesome, thank you Phillip for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
