Meet NA Leigh, or as she would like to be called Naleigh, (pronounced Nah-lee), author of Mister Hinkle’s Verum Ink – “the navy blue book,” the new exciting literary fiction novel released on the August 4th, 2020.
-Now, Naleigh, I understand your novel is available in both paperback and eBook. Tell us more about yourself and your book.
After 15 years of working in the corporate world, I decided to give up the 8-5 grind to become a writer.
Was it scary? ABSOLUTELY! Was it worth it? More than you’ll ever know.
Mr. Hinkle’s Verum Ink – “the navy blue book” is a story of love, loss, friendship, and self-discovery and is for anyone who is willing to dig deep down and allow themselves to be transported to another world.
-Wow, that is amazing and very brave, very similar to my own story! What inspired you to write this book?
It’s cliché but my English teacher said to write what you know. I’ve seen so much of the good and bad in the human psyche that has been completely misunderstood, decisions that have led people astray, or things done that seemed out of character all for the sake of survival. So I decided to write about it.
-That sounds very interesting! What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?
Time management. When I started writing, I would write from sun up to sun down, forget to eat, and get lost in Mr. Hinkle’s world.
-Yes when I was writing my novel I turned into a typewriter that eats occasionally and sleeps 2 hours a day, I was just so excited to write it all before it’s gone from my mind! How do you stand out from your competition?
Literary fiction is an art genre. I don’t think there are two books that are alike or that can be alike because they explore so much of the human mind and exploit all of our limitations.
-That is very true! Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?
Absolutely. My favorite books are The Alchemist, Le Petit Prince, and The Velveteen Rabbit. These three books have changed my life.
-The Velveteen Rabbit is a personal favorite! Tell us, what is your next step as an author?
I’m already writing my next book – “the crimson diary”. In addition, I’m working on the audiobook for “the navy blue book”. But of course, marketing my debut novel has been a priority.
-Yes the first child always gets the most attention lol! And audio book market is growing exponentially these days especially during the pandemic. Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?
Yes. 1 – write for yourself, not to make money. If you do that, the writing will always be worth it. 2 – stay true to yourself and what you want to accomplish. 3 – Not everyone can market so find a professional that you trust (this means doing your research and taking a look at their past work to see if it aligns with your vision).
That is amazing advice, very true! Is there anything else you would like to add?
Follow your dream. Regardless of what obstacles may come to pass, someone out there may need to hear what you have to say.
That’s awesome. Thank you, NA Leigh, for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
