The Hands That Held Me

Meet Lisa Jo Symonds, Author of The Hands That Held Me the shocking, dark, but inspirational memoir Released on November 27, 2019.

-Now, Lisa Jo, I understand your memoir is available on kindle, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook versions, which is very impressive. Tell us more about yourself and your book

The Hands That Held Me is my book of memoirs where I share in shocking details of the horrors of my childhood and the hardships throughout life that resulted.  My story is not for the weak at heart and contains topics including child abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, child trafficking, addictions, overdose, death, domestic violence and more.  I then share with readers how I was able to finally share my story after 50 years of keeping it all secretly buried, and how I overcame multiple addictions and a lifetime of emotional pain, experienced true healing, and used my story and my education to help other survivors.  My story reminds survivors they are not alone, gives them strength and inspiration as well as a message of hope that they too can climb out of the hell they were in, leaving their past behind, and not allowing their past to dictate their future!

-Wow! That is such an inspiration! I am sorry you had to go through all that. What inspired you to write this book?

The need to help others, experience true healing, and free myself from the burdens of the past.

-That’s a very noble cause. What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?

Telling enough to help others and purge my soul but withholding enough to protect those I care about who could be hurt by exposing them or certain actions.

-Yes of course, understood. How do you stand out from your competition?

I have not spent one moment even considering competition. For me, it is not about competition, but rather it is about helping others by sharing my story.

-Yes of course, your boom is not about sales, it is a message of universal healing! Personally I am reading through it at the moment and I must say it is a piece of unique art. Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?

I only read non-fiction.  Typically memoirs, true crime, history, science, medical research.  I also write and publish my research on the long-term effects of childhood trauma, addiction, and addiction treatment.

-You are a true hero Lisa, the first author I met who uses the true power of the word as a weapon in the face of adversity! Tell us, what is your next step as an author?

I have published my 2nd book (also non-fiction) only one month ago, “Global Burden: The Human Experience Hidden Behind Covid-19”.  It is a collaborative book of many writers and how they personal have been affected by or responded to the pandemic and chaos happening since it began.  I also have a sequel to finish and publish to my memoir, but I have to wait…. Timing is everything.  I plan to continue writing and publishing non-fiction and other research.

-That is great to know, I am sure your fans (Me included) are all looking forward to reading your future works and all your literary contributions. Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?

If it tortures you not to write it…. Then write it!  When a story is truly meant to be told it will burn inside of you until you publish it.  I never suggest anyone just decide to write, pick a topic, then try to “come up with the words”.

-True words! Is there anything else you would like to add?

It always helps to “have a purpose” in your writing that goes far beyond royalties.  Much satisfaction is gained by knowing your words have helped others or made improvements in areas that needed them.

That is the best purpose any book could ever have in my opinion. A True inspiration, thank you Lisa Jo Symonds for those great insights and your message of kindness, may it create a ripple effect of kindness around the whole world! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
