Meet Mitchka Herard, Author of TJ’s Island Adventures the new exciting Children’s book Released on Labor Day Weekend
-Now, Mitchka, I understand your novel is a hardcover and Ebook. Tell us more about yourself and your book
TJ’s Island Adventures is a book about a boy who is eager to learn more about his Haitian culture. He does so by way of a Haitian myth. The myth is of a sea creature named Met Dlo and it is a very fun and playful way to educate kids about both the past and present cultural facts regarding the Island and its people.
-Sounds cool! What inspired you to write this book?
My nephew inspired me to write this. Like me, he is Haitian American and has not yet had the opportunity to be educated about his background. I am also attempting to cease any negative stereotypes that are attached to Haitians by creating a positive outlook on the people and Island.
-What was the main challenge you faced when creating your book?
The main challenge I faced was educating myself about my own background. Not challenging in the sense that it was difficult to do so but challenging that it took me so long to inform myself of my history.
-I understand! How do you stand out from your competition?
By being authentically me and wishing the best for not only the current but future generation as well. I think that shows in my work.
-Are you a huge reader yourself? And what do you usually read? Any favorites?
I am not an avid reader; my interest lies primarily in writing. However, I am a poet as well and often like to read works from my favorite poets, such as Lang Leav and Shakespeare.
-Tell us, what is your next step as an author?
My next step is to write a sequel as this will be a book series. I am also working on production projects as well and a poetry book.
-Interesting! Do you have any tips or advice for other aspiring indie authors?
My main advice would be to take things slow and be sure to do as much research as possible in terms of Marketing, editing and publishing. Also save as much money as you can devote to your book if you are not taking the traditional publishing route. It can be a tough process but in the end it is worth it.
-Very true! Is there anything else you would like to add?
So far this has been a wild ride for me, but I cannot wait to continue writing more stories for people to enjoy.
That’s awesome, thank you Mitchka for those great insights! We all wish you the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing your next piece of work.
